Personal comment on the major needs in Germany which GAFFI should be addressing: We urgently need public awareness on invasive fungal diseases associated with high infection-related morbidity and mortality. In addition, official statistics by the Ministry of Health on the incidence and prevalence of fungal diseases at all are not correct and do not present the scope of the problem. National databases have to be created which allow researchers and public authorities to understand the frequencies of different fungal diseases in various patient groups.
