Fungal burden of disease in Romania: Data was presented as a poster at ISHAM 2015 conference. This has now been published Mares 2018.
How I have helped GAFFI so far: This year, I supported the GAFFI activity of estimation of serious fungal infection burden for Romania. Also, as president in charge of the Romanian Society of Medical Mycology and Mycotoxicology, I organized postgraduate educational courses for Romanian health professionals in different universities.
Personal comment on the major needs in Romania which GAFFI should be addressing: We need to change the following:
- Flucytosine is NOT available in Romania
- Natamycin for ophthalmic use is NOT available in Romania
- Clinical Mycology is poorly represented in medical students Curriculum
- Very few clinical laboratories can deal correctly with a fungal infection
